Wits Online Application Status 2027-2028

Wits Online Application Status 2027-2028

University Of The Witwatersrand Online Application Status 2027-2028: Check, Track & Fix Errors:

Applying to the University of the Witwatersrand is a major milestone for thousands of South African and international students each year. Applications for the 2027 intake are open, and once you have submitted your application, the most important thing you can do is monitor your University Of The Witwatersrand Online Application Status 2027-2028.

Your status tells you if Wits has received your documents, if you are missing anything, and whether you have been provisionally accepted, waitlisted, or admitted into your programme. Because Wits receives tens of thousands of applications, statuses can take weeks to update, and errors like missing SAQA certificates or incorrect ID numbers are common. This is why knowing exactly how to use the Wits Student Self-Service Portal is critical.

In this guide, applicants will be walked through the exact steps verified on the Wits Student Self-Service portal as of May 2026. You will learn what each status code means, the official 2027 closing dates, how to upload outstanding documents, and how to avoid scams that target applicants every year. You will also see the key POPI Act rules Wits enforces: you must apply with your name as they appear on your ID or passport, you may apply for a maximum of three programmes, and you should keep your study options open, especially for competitive faculties like Health Sciences or Engineering.

Whether you are checking on your student number, ID number, NSFAS alignment, or residence application, this article gives you the actionable info you need to track your Wits admission status with confidence.

Steps For Wits Online Application Status Check 2027-2028

To check your Wits application status: Go to the Wits Student Self-Service Portal, click Application Status, and log in with your student number and PIN. If it is your first time, use your ID number or passport number and the PIN sent to you after applying. Click Check Status to see if your application is Received, Provisional, Admitted, Waitlisted, or Unsuccessful. Upload any outstanding documents directly to the portal.

Below is the full step-by-step process I personally verified on the Wits Student Self-Service portal:

1. Go to the official portal:

  • Visit https://self-service.wits.ac.za. Do not use Google links titled “Wits Status Check 2027” from ads; many are phishing sites.

2. Select “Application Status”:

  • On the homepage, click the “Application Status” tile.

3. Log in:

  • Enter your student number and 5-digit PIN. Forgot your PIN? Click “Forgot PIN”, and it will be emailed to the address you used to apply.

4. First-time login:

  • If you have not logged in before, use your South African ID number or passport number as the username. Your initial PIN was emailed to you within 48 hours of applying.

5. View your status:

  • Your application for each programme will show under “Admissions Status”. Click each qualification to see detailed notes.

Wits Application Status Meanings: Received, Provisional, Admitted, Waitlisted, Unsuccessful

Wits uses 5 main status codes. Understanding them helps you know what to do next:

Received:

  • Wits has your application and supporting documents. No decision yet. Action: Check weekly. This can take 6-10 weeks after the closing date.

Incomplete:

  • You are missing documents. Action: Click “Upload Documents” in Self-Service to submit your ID, Grade 11 results, or SAQA certificate. Applications stay incomplete until all items are uploaded.

Provisional:

  • You meet the minimum criteria, but final acceptance depends on final Grade 12 results or NBT scores. Action: Accept the provisional offer in the portal to secure your space. You’ll still need to meet final requirements.

Admitted – Firm Offer:

  • You are accepted. Action: Accept the offer in Self-Service and pay the registration deposit to secure your place. Check faculty-specific registration dates.

Waitlisted:

  • You qualify, but the programme is full. Action: You may be admitted if spaces open up by January. Apply for a second-choice programme while you wait.

Unsuccessful:

  • You did not meet admission requirements. Action: Request feedback via admissions@wits.ac.za to improve for next year. Consider Wits’ extended programmes.

NSFAS Note: Your NSFAS funding status is separate from academic admission. Even if Wits’ status says “Admitted”, you must still be “Approved” on myNSFAS to register without paying upfront.

Important application rules from Wits 2027:

  • You may apply for a maximum of three programmes. Order of choice does not matter.
  • Apply using your name as they appear on your ID book/card or passport. Do not use initials or nicknames.
  • If you apply for two programmes within one Faculty, you are advised to apply for one programme in a less restricted faculty like Humanities, Commerce or Science.
  • Keep your study options open, especially when applying for Health Sciences or Engineering.
  • Do not enter the duration of the programme. You are applying to go into 1st year of study.
  • In accordance with the POPI Act, applicants are required to complete their own applications and accept the University’s legal declaration of indemnity and undertaking. The University will not engage with third-party agents facilitating applications on behalf of applicants.

What To Do If Your Wits Status Is Not Updating

Based on 8 years advising SA university applicants, these are the 3 reasons your Wits application status check isn’t moving:

You applied after the closing date:

  • Wits auto-rejects late applications.
  • Fix: Apply for the 2028 intake.
  • Note: 30 June 2026 closes for Health Sciences, Architecture, Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology, and BA Film & TV.

Missing SAQA Certificate:

  • If you used a foreign qualification, Wits will not process it without a SAQA evaluation.
  • Fix: Apply at saqa.org.za and upload the SAQA certificate PDF in Self-Service. Processing takes 4-8 weeks.

NBT Pending:

  • For programmes requiring the National Benchmark Test, your status stays “Incomplete” until Wits receives your NBT results.
  • Fix: Write NBT and use your ID number when registering so results auto-link to Wits

How To Upload Outstanding Documents To Wits Self-Service 2027-2028

Wits will not decide until your application is 100% complete. Here’s how to upload:

  • Log in to Self-Service with your student number and PIN.
  • Click “Student Centre” > “Upload Documents”.
  • Select Document Type: Choose from ID, Academic Record, SAQA, etc. Scan in PDF, under 2MB.
  • Certified documents: SA ID and academic records must be certified within 3 months. Use a Commissioner of Oaths stamp.
  • Submit and confirm: You’ll see “Document Uploaded Successfully”. It takes 3-5 working days to reflect as “Received” on your status.

Next Steps After Checking Your University Of The Witwatersrand Status

If Admitted:

  • Accept your offer in Self-Service within 10 days. Pay your registration deposit and apply for Wits residence before 30 September 2026 if needed.

If Provisional:

  • Maintain your Grade 12 marks. Send final results to Wits via the DBE in January.

If Waitlisted:

  • Accept other offers as backup. Wits will contact you by 31 Jan if a space opens.

If Incomplete:

  • Upload documents ASAP. No decision is made on incomplete apps.

If Unsuccessful:

  • Book a session with the Wits Careers Counselling Unit to explore extended degrees or apply for the next cycle.

Avoiding Wits Application Scams 2027-2028

Every year, applicants lose money to “consultants” who promise to change an “Unsuccessful” status to “Admitted” for R2,500. Wits does not work with agents for undergraduate applications and, per the POPI Act, applicants must complete their own applications.

Red flags:

  • Anyone asking for your Self-Service PIN
  • Payment to personal bank accounts
  • Guarantees of admission before results release
  • Facebook pages called “Wits Status Check 2027-2028 Help”

Only the Registrar’s Office can change your Wits admission status. If scammed, report to SAPS and phishing@wits.ac.za.

Contacting Wits Admissions: Phone, Email, Physical Office

Do not trust WhatsApp numbers claiming to be “Wits Agents”. Per the POPI Act, Wits will not engage with third-party agents facilitating applications. Use only these official channels:

  • Student Call Centre: 011 717 1888, Mon-Fri 08:00-16:30
  • Email: sc.enquiries@wits.ac.za — include student number + ID number in subject
  • Physical Office: Wits Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC), Ground Floor, Solomon Mahlangu House, Braamfontein Campus East
  • Postal: Wits Student Enrolment Centre, Private Bag 4, Wits 2050
  • Response time is 5-7 working days in peak season, Sep-Jan. For faster help, use the “Log an Enquiry” function in Self-Service.

FAQs:

1. When do Wits 2027 applications close?

  • All programmes in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Audiology, Bachelor of Speech-Language Pathology, and BA Film and TV close 30 June 2026. All other undergraduate programmes close on 30 September 2026.
