Does GEPF Pay Once?

Does GEPF Pay Once?

Does GEPF Pay Once?

For retirees, GEPF provides ongoing monthly pension payments rather than a single payment. However, members who leave government service before reaching retirement age may receive a one-time lump-sum payment based on their contributions to the fund.

According to the GEP Law, the Fund aims to grant annual pension increases equal to at least 75% of the year-on-year increase in the Consumer Price Index, plus any additional amount needed to maintain the purchasing power of at least 75% of the pension at retirement.

However, if the pensioner retired after the previous increase, they will only receive a pro-rated increase, and any increase above what is specified in the GEP Law is granted at the discretion of the Board of Trustees and is subject to affordability.

Types Of GEPF Retirement Plans

The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) offers different retirement options for its members, including normal retirement, early retirement, and retirement due to medical reasons. Members affected by job restructuring or changes can also access their retirement benefits.

Normal Retirement

For GEPF members, the normal retirement age is 60. The benefits you receive depend on your years of pensionable service:

  •  If you have less than 10 years of service: You will receive a gratuity, which is a one-time cash lump sum equal to your contributions to the fund.
  • If you have 10 or more years of service: You will receive both a gratuity and a monthly pension.

Early Retirement

Members can retire before reaching the age of 60 under certain conditions. Again, your years of service will determine your benefits:

  • For members with 10 or more years of service: You will receive both a gratuity and a monthly pension. However, the amounts will be reduced by 0.33% for each month you retire early.

Ill Health and Other Retirements

If you retire for medical reasons, due to an injury on the job, or because your position has been eliminated, you may receive enhanced benefits:

  • For members with over 10 years of service: You will receive both a gratuity and a monthly pension, along with an additional annual payment.
  • For those with less than 10 years of service: You will receive benefits that are at least equal to what you would get if you resigned.

GEPF offers retirees regular monthly payments instead of a one-time payout. However, there are situations, like lump-sum withdrawals or death benefits, where a one-time payment may be made.
