How To Get IRP5 From GEPF?

How To Get IRP5 From GEPF?

How To Get IRP5 From GEPF?

An IRP5 is a tax certificate that shows the income you have received and the tax that’s been deducted over a specific tax year. If you are getting a pension or a lump-sum payment from GEPF, you will need the IRP5 to report your income and stay tax-compliant.

The GEPF IRP5, issued by the Government Employees Pension Fund, provides details of the money you’ve received from them and the tax that’s already been taken out. This document is essential when filing your taxes with SARS, ensuring that you properly declare your income and meet your tax obligations.

How To Get IRP5 From GEPF

You can access your tax certificate through the following mediums;

  • Visit the official website of GEPF
  • Through the GEPF Mobile App
  • Through the Self-Service portal

FAQs About GEPF IRP5 Taxes and Retirement Benefits

Below are some common questions and answers that members may ask from GEPF;

After retirement, do I need to submit tax returns?

A: Yes. Since your retirement benefits are taxable, you are required to submit your tax returns every year during the income tax return season. GEPF will provide you with an IRP5 to help you file your taxes, but it is your responsibility as a GEPF member to ensure your tax returns are submitted.

Is my retirement benefit taxable?

A: Yes. Any pension benefit accumulated after 1 March 1998 is subject to tax.

What happens if I retire and transfer my pension to an external fund?

A: Your pension will not be taxed at the time of transfer from GEPF to an external fund. However, if you withdraw funds from the external fund or retire from it, you will be taxed according to that fund’s rules. To avoid financial distress, GEPF encourages members to retain their benefits within the GEPF.

Why is my pension payment taxed? Why does SARS tax pensioners?

A: According to SARS regulations, pension income and annuities are classified as taxable income. Therefore, they must be taxed by law.

Why do pensioners experience fluctuating tax amounts? Why isn’t there a flat tax rate?

A: GEPF does not manage tax matters, but as a pensioner, you are taxed based on your income. The amount of tax you pay depends on your monthly pension, your age, and any additional income sources you may have.
