HCI Foundation Bursary 2026-2027: A Guide Investing in South Africa’s Future

HCI Foundation Bursary 2026-2027

The HCI Foundation Bursary Programme is dedicated to supporting academically talented and financially deserving students pursuing Honours or Postgraduate Diploma studies at a South African public university or university of technology. We believe in empowering the next generation of leaders and fostering a brighter future for all.

Who qualifies?

South African citizens, refugees, and asylum seekers who fulfil the following criteria:
  • Current HCI Foundation bursary recipients who are continuing their undergraduate studies in 2026 at a public university or university of technology in South Africa.
  • New 2026 Honours and Postgraduate Diploma students at the listed institutions.
  • The gross family income should be less than R38 000 per month.
  • Age should be 35 years or younger on 31 March 2026.

Ongoing current bursary recipients completing their undergraduate studies and new students at Honours and Postgraduate Diploma level at the following institutions only:
  • University of Cape Town
  • University of the Western Cape
  • University of Johannesburg
  • Nelson Mandela University
  • Rhodes University
  • University of KwaZulu-Natal
  • Stellenbosch University
  • University of the Witwatersrand
  • University of the Free State
  • North-West University
  • University of Pretoria

How to Apply

We wish to inform all prospective applicants that the HCI Foundation’s online bursary application platform has been permanently discontinued. Going forward, bursary applications will no longer be submitted through the digital portal. Instead, we will be working directly with selected universities to identify eligible and deserving students. Applications to the HCI Foundation Bursary Programme will be by invitation only and facilitated through your institution’s internal channels. If you require further information, please contact the Financial Aid or Advancement Office at your university.

Your Application Checklist

  • You must have a working email address.
  • You must have a working cell phone number.
  • You must have a student number if you are applying for your second or higher year of study. This is only applicable to our returning students.
  • Provide proof of your parents’ or guardians’ exact monthly income (no bank statements). Submit proof for both parents. If one is deceased, include a death certificate. For single-parent households, submit an affidavit. If a parent is unemployed, submit an affidavit of unemployment.

Conditions of our bursary

The HCI Foundation bursary is free, and we do not require bursary recipients to repay their bursaries EXCEPT in special circumstances where:
  • The student failed due to a lack of commitment and did not inform the Foundation in advance.
  • The student is intentionally refusing to participate in bursary programme activities, both during and after their studies.
  • The student provided false/inaccurate information to unduly receive the bursary.
