What Is GEPF?

The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF), established in 1996, is a defined benefit fund that manages pensions and related benefits for South African government employees. As the largest pension fund in South Africa and one of the largest in Africa and globally, GEPF offers its members a range of benefits, including withdrawal, retirement, ill-health or disability, and death benefits. The fund operates under the Government Employees Pension (GEP) Law of 1996.

What Type of fund is GEPF?

The GEPF is a defined benefit fund, meaning that the benefits are outlined in the fund’s rules and are guaranteed. This means the benefits do not depend on the amount contributed by the member or employer.

What Benefits Does GEPF Offer to Members?

The GEPF offers:

  • Benefits for normal, early, late retirement and ill health retirement
  • Benefits for members affected by retrenchment/ restructuring
  • Funeral benefits
  • Child’s pension
  • Spouse pension

How Is GEPF Annual Pension Increase Determined?

The GEPF is regulated by the Government Employees Pension (GEP) Law of 1996 and its accompanying rules. These rules, along with the GEPF’s Pension Increase and Funding Level policies, provide clear guidelines for determining the annual increase given to pensioners. The Board of Trustees can approve a pension increase only if it meets certain conditions.

One important requirement is that the Fund’s assets must cover at least 90% of its liabilities. In other words, the Fund needs to have enough assets to pay for at least 90% of the pension payments it owes now and in the future. Therefore, any approved increase must be affordable, taking all these factors into account.
